In children, the development of the ears is completed before the general development of the body. With 6 years of age the ears are reaching 90% of their final development. Between a wide variety of congenital ear abnormalities 'prominent ears' is the most frequent one. The basic defect is in the development of some certain cartilage structures. In the first weeks after the birth, splints perpetrated from medium hard materials can be used for a correction without any operational intervention. Unfortunately this method is only valid for the first few days of life. After these days the developmental changes of the ear cartilage does not allow a correction by a splint.

The best age for a correction of prominent ears is the age of 6. At this time the major development of the ear cartilage is completed and also the psychological trauma effect of this disorder can be prevented at these preschool years. However, the procedure is applicable at any age.

This procedure can be perfectly performed under local anesthesia. In case the child has some adaptation problems related to the procedure or there are some other reasons for refusing this method, a general anesthesia can also be a good choice for the procedure. The intervention will last for about 1.5 hours and the incision will be perfectly hided behind the ear on a tiny area.

For 2 weeks after the operation the use of a dressing around the head will protect any trauma at sleep.
